How it works

Understand Product Footprint

Our AI powered Carbon Model makes it easy for you to understand the planet impact of millions of products. It provides a single Carbon Score that captures all greenhouse gas emissions emitted through the product lifecycle into a single number expressed as the pounds of CO2 equivalent (CO2E) emitted. Explore our detailed methodology in the sections below.

How Products are benchmarked?

Our carbon score is based on three factors:

  • sector level emissions as laid out in the Environmentally Extended Input-Output (EEIO) model. It approximates the end-to-end lifecycle emissions into a single measure in the form of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO2E).
  • product specific environmental certifications
  • we profile the manufacturer/brand for signals on top of that

How Recommendation works?

You can use our recommendations engine Carbon Light to understand how a product rates against similar products on both price and planet impact to make sustainable choices that fit your budget. Our recommendation engine intelligently compares products across different categories to empower you to not just make product level choices but lifestyle changes. For example, when you search for dairy milk, you can see the Carbon Score of not just other brands of dairy milk but other substitute milk types as well

What does Carbon Impact Score mean?

We have conducted a thorough analysis of countless online products, meticulously calculating their carbon footprint. Moreover, we compare each product to others within its respective product cluster, such as dairy and plant-based milks, which are grouped together. To simplify the process, we divide the pool into four distinct buckets based on their carbon score. The rating buckets are illustrated below...

Excellent

Products with minimal CO2E emissions, representing the pinnacle of sustainability.

Good

These items have a moderate CO2E emission level, showcasing a solid commitment to sustainability,

Fair

Have a noticeable environmental impact with CO2E emissions that meet, but don't exceed, the current industry average.

Poor

Items with a poor rating have high CO2E emissions, indicating a significant environmental footprint.
